Biochemical Engineer

Bioreactor Development · Oxford, Oxfordshire
Department Bioreactor Development
Employment Type Full-Time
Minimum Experience Mid-level
Compensation DOE

Not every biochemical engineer has an opportunity to make a global impact for good. Those at Ivy Farm certainly do. Food is the second largest contributor to climate change. You’ll be part of a highly skilled bioprocessing team of six, and part of our community of some 40 scientists; one that’s on a mission to create the world’s best guiltfree, sustainable meat. And the meat we make is cultivated meat. It is just like real meat, only made differently.

You’re already an established biochemical engineer with a degree or PhD in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, or biotechnology, who is working in a commercial organisation and helping deliver the scale-up of bioreactor processes. You’ll be working with mammalian cells in bench scale bioreactors and above, and have experience in running and optimising processes in fed-batch and perfusion. But you’re now ready for something a bit different; and something that can make a real difference too.

Responsibilities:

  • Designing, setting-up and optimising end-to-end bioreactor processes at bench-scale, as a continuation of the established processes and ensuring that deliverables are successfully met within timelines
  • Developing processes and implementing enabling technologies that enhance volumetric productivity, with the scalability in mind to support manufacturing operations
  • Working on cross functional teams to take proven concepts that deliver significant process improvement with the goal of creating a commercially viable pilot manufacturing plant
  • Identifying methodologies to enable the most efficient expansion and harvesting of mammalian cell cultures, taking into consideration costs, goals and resources and gaining buy-in from the taskforce
  • Using Design of Experiment software and data led research to streamline experimental and processes
  • Understanding industry established and emerging processes covering the over-arching bioprocess (from raw materials to final product), identifying the benefits and/or risks with the commercial constraints
  • Analysing and summarising experimental results, sharing learning with colleagues, managers and leaders

Desirable Experience

  • Bioprocess development in a commercial product led company
  • Designing, developing, and operating bioreactors up to 20L
  • Technical development and scale-up of upstream bioprocesses
  • Optimised downstream bioprocess technologies including filtration, centrifugation
  • Worked with aseptic mammalian cell culture research projects
  • Bioreactor processes including fed-batch and perfusion
  • Presenting results of experiments

We’re an innovative bunch, with a can-do attitude and one that’s unafraid to think differently. We also have projects targets, compliance expectations and – as in any fast-growing business – sometimes competing priorities. That’ll be something you’ve not just seen before but something that you relish. We’ll be looking to you to share you expertise and experience with your team.

We also realise this may well be your first venture into cultivated meat – and that’s absolutely fine – we’ve great team that’ll be excited to help you to get to grips with that too. If you have experience of PFD, P&IDs HAZOPCAD (Autodesk) and Design of Experiment software (DoE) software that’d be great too.

So if you’re ready to join an emerging and ground breaking industry, that’s both able to think differently and actively looking to do so - and one where you can make a difference to animal well-being and sustainability - then we’re waiting to hear from you.

Thank You
